By any measure, farming delivers value for money - for every pound spent on Welsh agriculture, it returns £9 to the wider economy. It demands, as both farming unions and climate experts have pointed out, an appropriate financial response from Government. Especially when the burden of the nation hitting Net Zero by 2050 falls mainly on rural shoulders. But one the Welsh Government must wake up to - and fast.įor farmers, the Government's default ‘the budget is the budget' line is at best inadequate, at worst, insulting. But if the market is unwilling to deliver that as a premium, then support payments are the only way. Going green, as Welsh farmers and the wider industry fully acknowledge, is an inevitable baseline.
